Students scrounge up pennies for K9s

Posted

WEYAUWEGA – St. Peter Lutheran School hosted Waupaca County Sheriff Deputy Muske and his K9, Rondo, to learn about how dogs are used in police work. They learned that the K9 program is funded entirely through donations so the students rallied up a fundraiser: they started a penny war.
For one month, each class had a designated jar by their classroom door. Students were encouraged to bring in pennies and dollar bills and put them in their own jar for positive points. Students also “sabotaged” other classrooms by filling their jars with nickels, dimes and quarters which were counted as negative points. At the end of the month, the 7th-8th grade class was crowned as the Penny War victor with 10,865 points. The students celebrated their win by presenting a check to the K9 unit for a grand total of $2,091.57. When asked about the experience, one of the 8th graders said, “The penny war was very exciting, but sadly it’s the last penny war we got to do. It’s a fun and competitive way to raise money for the K-9 unit, but also an opportunity to show our Christian love by selflessly giving donations.”
