WAUPACA – THE Winchester Academy will present “Beyond the Headlines: A Scientist’s View of Bird Flu,” by Thomas Friedrich on October 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Waupaca Area Public Library lower-level meeting rooms.
Thomas Friedrich, Ph.D., grew up in Wauwatosa idolizing Robin Yount and Carl Sagan.
He always wanted to be a scientist of some kind, focusing on physics, before becoming interested in infectious diseases while reading Laurie Garrett’s The Coming Plague in college.
Friedrich is now a professor of virology at UW-Madison where he teaches students about global health, HIV/AIDS, and emerging infectious diseases.
He will present what we currently know about bird flu viruses circulating in dairy cattle and will explain how viruses jump species and how scientists assess whether viruses pose a pandemic risk.
Mark Flora and Sally Stevens are the sponsors for this program.
