SCANDINAVIA — A late-night dispute between two Nicaraguan brothers following a shift at a local farm on Bestul Road in Scandinavia resulted in a felony domestic abuse charge after a man allegedly broke his brother’s hand with a belt, according to a criminal complaint filed in Waupaca County Circuit Court.
Arlin Benjamin Rivera Caseres, 33, of Scandinavia, faces charges of felony substantial battery and misdemeanor disorderly conduct, both carrying domestic abuse enhancers.
On May 6 around 10:30 p.m., a Spanish-speaking male called 911 and hung up but emergency dispatchers managed to establish phone contact with a witness at the scene.
The witness said a man was threatening people with a knife and everyone fled the house.
Deputuies arrived at the the Bestul Road property, including Deputy Bigelbach, Deputy Booth, Deputy Susa, and Sgt. Lewinski with Deputy Minehan serving as a telephone translator.
They flooded the area with spotlights, illuminating the darkened house.
Outside the house, Deputy Bigelbach interviewed a man with an injured hand covered with dried blood.
The man said he and his brother, Rivera Caseres, finished their farm work and drank some alcohol. The brother said he was going to bed which angered Rivera Caseres, who then whipped him with his belt. The brother locked himself in the bedroom with his wife and two children. Rivera Caseres retrieved a knife from the kitchen area. The brother and his family escaped the house and called 911.
Deputy Bigelbach hooked up Minehan’s translated audio to his patrol car’s external speaker and blasted commands in Spanish. The suspect emerged and was taken into custody and his identity was verified.
Following his arrest, Rivera Caseres submitted to a preliminary breath test, which yielded a blood-alcohol concentration of .068%.
