Blossom and Bloom rents land from city

Posted

NEW LONDON – Blossom and Bloom Greenhouse will be leasing a little less than half an acre of land from the city of New London for the purpose of growing plants that it will sell.
The New London Common Council approved a lease between the city and Blossom and Bloom when it met June 16. The land that Blossom and Bloom is renting is a triangle shaped piece of property on Hill Street at the railroad crossing. The type of plants that will be grown on the property would not obstruct vision in that triangle. As part of the approved agreement, the city will have the ability to access utilities that are located in the area if the need arises.
The agreement was discussed at the June 1 New London Public Works/Sewer Utility Commission meeting. At this meeting, New London City Administrator Chad Hoerth told the commission that the city was approached by Blossom and Bloom Greenhouse regarding growing plants on the property.
He said other cities provide similar arrangements with businesses.
The agreement will automatically renew on an annual basis unless there is a cancellation by either the city or Blossom and Bloom at list 60 days prior to the renewal date, which will be July 1 of each year. Rent would be equal to what the city is charging for an acre of farmland in the industrial park, which is currently $115 per acre. Since the piece of land in question is a little less than half an acre, the rent would be $46 annually.
Hoerth added that if the rate to rent farmland in the industrial park were to increase, the rent for the land rented by Blossom and Bloom could also be adjusted.
