Samaritan’s Purse volunteers lead cleanup and healing in New London

Posted

NEW LONDON – Throughout the streets of New London this past month, a sea of orange T-shirts and sweatshirts has signaled a different kind of “run” on the Wolf River: a run of compassion and hard labor.
Volunteers with Samaritan’s Purse International Relief, working in conjunction with local churches and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, have been a constant presence in the city for several weeks, assisting residents as they navigate the devastating aftermath of the historic April flood.
The scope of their work has been both literal and spiritual. Teams have been seen in neighborhoods removing ruined personal property and furniture, cleaning out mud-filled basements, and applying Shock Wave disinfectant to sanitize and prevent mold growth. In public spaces, volunteers have spent hours shoveling the fine, grey silt and dust left behind by receding waters in local parks and stacking sandbags for removal.
“They offered more than just labor,” said Ann Faucher, local resident and business owner. “They offered emotional support and prayer to anyone who was willing. Wherever they went in the city or at homes along County X, you could feel a sense of gratitude and peace in their midst.”
True to the motto emblazoned on their relief trucks—”Helping in Jesus’ Name”—the group’s mission focuses on providing the “hands and feet” of their faith during times of crisis.
For those still in need of assistance, the volunteers confirmed they would remain on-site in New London through the end of this week. Their efforts have provided a vital bridge for a community working to restore its homes and spirits before the summer season.
