The SPASH Panthers went on the road to open the season against the River Falls Wildcats on Aug. 20, who are coming off a 2025 season in which they went 11-2 and were a win away from a trip to state.
The Panthers moved the ball down the field on their opening drive before quarterback Trent Breitbach found a receiver for a 12-yard touchdown pass to make it 6-0.
On the following drive for SPASH, Breitbach connected with wide receiver Isaac Yang for a 77-yard pitch and catch that Yang took to the end zone.
Breitbach scored on the two-point conversion with a quarterback keeper to put his team up 14-0.
River Falls got on the board at the end of the first quarter with a 41-yard field goal to make the deficit 14-3.
SPASH quickly responded in the opening moments of the second quarter as Breitbach threw his second touchdown pass to Yang from 20 yards out to make the score 21-3.
On River Falls next drive, they turned the ball over, as Marshall Mrozek intercepted a pass to give SPASH good field position at their own 45-yard line.
Trent Breitbach made River Falls pay for their mistake as he led his team down the field and scored his fourth touchdown of the game on an eight-yard pass over the middle, making the score 27-3.
Breitbach on his first half performance, “It’s just a lot of fun to be in this offense when you have guys that pour into you every day at practice, from the coaching staff that spends countless hours to get that play right; it looks like me, but I’m just a mailman, I’m just delivering packages to the players.”
River Falls cut into the Panthers’ lead with an 89-yard touchdown pass that made the deficit 27-10.
The Panthers pushed the score to 34-10 in the third quarter as running back Henry Roth took a handoff 31 yards for a score.
River Falls scored their second touchdown of the game as a swing pass went 21 yards for a touchdown; they followed up with a run to convert two points and make it a 34-18 deficit.
In the fourth quarter, Trent Breitbach took a quarterback keeper up the sideline for an 81-yard touchdown run to close the door on River Falls and make the final score 41-18 to start the Panthers season 1-0.
SPASH will face New Richmond in week two at home on Aug. 27.
