Swiping and skipping cell phones

Ex-employee charged with theft

WAUPACA — A Waupaca man has been charged with felony theft after he was allegedly caught on surveillance video stealing several high-value cell phones from the US Cellular store on 1045 W Fulton Street where he was employed.
Jason David Brewer, 44, was charged on Dec. 15 with Theft - Movable Property (>$2500-$5000), a Class I Felony.
According to the criminal complaint, a US Cellular corporate security in Iowa viewed surveillance footage on Nov. 6, 2025, and observed Brewer stealing cell phones from the store.
The complainant, James A. Rozendaal, requested law enforcement be present on Nov. 7, 2025, during Brewer’s termination. Following the meeting, officers made contact with Brewer, who initially stated he had thrown the phones away but was willing to use his outstanding paychecks and commission to reimburse the company.
While being driven to the police department for a discussion, Brewer admitted he could not return the phones because he had sold them.
During questioning, Brewer told an officer he had taken four phones—an iPhone 16, an iPhone 16 Pro, an iPhone 16 Pro Max, and a Samsung 24—which he claimed were non-working demo units. He claimed he sold three of the phones to “random people” at South Park for $50 apiece and “skipped (like a rock)” the iPhone 16 Pro Max into Shadow Lake.
The company later requested a total restitution amount of $3,696.98 for five verified stolen phones based on their replacement costs.
