Thunderbirds take Cardinals go to five sets

IOLA- Iola-Scandinavia Thunderbirds volleyball hosted the Pacelli Cardinals on Sept. 3 in their regular-season home opener.

In the opening set, Pacelli took an early lead as Peyton Zdroik delivered a kill to force the Thunderbirds to take a timeout.

The Cardinals kept the pressure on throughout the first set, going up 18-5 after an ace by Aliyah Russell.

Josi Williams finished the set for Pacelli with an ace to make it 25-12 and give the Cardinals a 1-0 set lead.

In the second set, the Thunderbirds came alive as they took an 11-5 lead after a Natalie Koss ace.

Iola kept the scoring going as they went up 17-9 after a Pacelli scoring attempt went out of bounds, and they took a timeout to regroup.

A block followed by a kill by the Thunderbirds gave them a 22-13 lead and the momentum in the set.

Ruby Maus finished off the set for Iola with a kill to make the score 25-17 and even the match at 1-1.

A back-and-forth third set was tied at 15-15 as Pacelli controlled the set in the early going, but the Thunderbirds took the lead 18-17 after a kill gave them the advantage.

Pacelli regained the lead, and a Williams kill made the score 23-19 in favor of the Cardinals.

The Cardinals won the third set after an Iola scoring attempt went out of bounds, and they won 25-22, taking a 2-1 set lead.

The Thunderbirds started strong in the fourth set, leading 20-11. The Cardinals narrowed the gap to 24-21, but Iola held on to win 25-21 and force a fifth set.

Pacelli took the lead early in the fifth set, and the Thunderbirds made it close, but the Cardinals finished off the final set 15-11 to get the win.
