CLINTONVILLE – Students in the Clintonville School District will now be charged $25 per year for a membership to the Clintonville Rec Center instead of $114.
The Clintonville Board of Education approved the change at its Oct. 27 meeting.
Leading off the discussion, Clintonville Superintendent Troy Kuhn told the board that the district had recently increased the Rec Center membership for all students to $114 per year, regardless of where they attend school or if they participate in school sports.
After discussing the matter with the person in charge of the Rec Center, Kuhn said he was proposing that the membership revert back to $25 per year for student athletes in the Clintonville School District. The recommendation also called for the membership cost to be $50 per year for Clintonville students who do not participate in sports.
Kuhn told the board that student athletes already pay athletic dues.
The recommendation also called for the membership cost to remain at $114 per year for students who are not in the Clintonville School District.
Board Vice President Kris Strauman asked for verification that the athletic dues go to the district’s athletic department.
Kuhn said that was correct.
Strauman then asked why the district would consider charging non-athletes double for a Rec Center membership if they want to be healthy.
Board member Ben Huber added that other students pay activity fees to participate in school activities other than sports.
“So, why is it only athlete activities that would be counted and other activities might not be?” Huber asked.
Strauman recommended the district charge $25 for all Clintonville students, and $114 for non-Clintonville students.
“I don’t think we should distinguish between athlete and non-athlete,” Strauman said. “We want to encourage kids to use those facilities and be healthy.”
